Gordon’s got guts
Source:Editor's Blog
There’s really only been one topic this week – the impending translation of Gordon Brown from No 11 to No 10, and his fairly radical approaches to senior LibDem people.
I’ll disclose here that I become less and less fond of party politics as I get older. There are people to admire and people to distrust in all the parties I like the idea of a prime minister with the courage to dispassionately look at ‘all the talents’ and bring in honest brokers from his entire acquaintance. Why should we be denied the services of able public servants simply because they do not belong to the party that wins the election? In fact, Ashdown is more of an independent than a liberal these days, and that’s another thing – we need independents in both Houses.
The counter argument asks: ‘Is the labour party so devoid of talent that it can’t fill the cabinet from within its own ranks?’ That completely misses the point. Brown can take this route precisely because he has a strong enough majority not to need to. In the event he seems to have been turned down. I think we will be the poorer for that but whatever happens next week, I think this piece of lateral thinking will improve his standing with the electorate.
