Rail freight haulier EWS Network , part of German logistics group DB Schenker, has said it has won a contract to move containers for Israeli shipping company Zim Integrated Shipping Services.
EWS said its network division will shift more than 100 containers a week for Zim from ports at Felixstowe in Suffolk and Tilbury on the Thames estuary to Wakefield in Yorkshire.
Volumes should increase in the coming months, the company added.
ZIM handles over two million containers per annum with ships calling at 180 ports worldwide. It is the first time that the company has used rail freight in a major way in the UK, having previously used road haulage, EWS said.
